Frequently Asked Questions

What is a food co-op?

A food co-op is a grocery store that is owned and operated by its members. Unlike traditional grocery stores owned by corporations or investors, co-ops are owned and controlled by the people who shop there. Co-ops emphasize local sourcing and community engagement.

Who's behind this project?

A dedicated group of volunteers from New Hartford, Granby, and Barkhamsted. Our Board of Directors includes community members with backgrounds in nonprofits, technology, agriculture, and publishing.

When will the store open?

Building a food co-op typically takes several years, but we're working hard to open as soon as possible while ensuring we build a sustainable foundation. Sign up for our mailing list for the most recent updates.

Why does it take so long to open?

Co-ops are community-funded startups that require careful planning. We need to hire a General Manager, secure a location, complete buildout, and ensure we have enough member investment to operate sustainably.

Who will run the store?

A professional General Manager will oversee day-to-day operations. An elected Board of Directors provides strategic direction and ensures the co-op stays true to its mission.

Where will the store be located?

We're planning to locate in Northwestern Connecticut. Market studies are underway to determine the best location. Our region has a strong agricultural community but currently has no existing food co-ops.

How is a co-op different from a regular grocery store?

Ownership: Members own the store, not outside investors

Governance: Each member gets one vote, regardless of how much they've invested

Profits: Any surplus is reinvested in the store or returned to members

Mission: Focus on community benefit, not maximizing shareholder returns

Do I have to be a member to shop?

Most food co-ops are open to everyone. Members typically receive benefits like discounts, patronage dividends, and voting rights, but anyone can shop at the store.

How do I become a member?

Details about membership will be available as we get closer to opening. Typically, becoming a member involves purchasing a share in the co-op, which can often be paid over time.

Can I buy more than one membership?

No. Co-ops follow a "one member, one vote" principle. Individuals cannot own multiple shares—this ensures equal control and prevents any single person from having outsized influence.

Do I need to renew my membership?

Membership is permanent with no renewal fees once you've purchased your share.

What happens if the store doesn't open?

If members vote to dissolve the co-op before opening, remaining funds would be returned to shareholders proportionally.

How can I get involved?

There are many ways to help:

Spread the word: Tell friends and neighbors about the co-op

Volunteer: Help with events, outreach, and planning

Become a founding member: Early members help shape the co-op's future

Attend meetings: Participate in community discussions
