What Is a Food Co-op?
A food cooperative is a grocery store that is owned and governed by its members. Unlike conventional grocery chains, a co-op is driven by decisions to best serve the community.
When you join a food co-op, you're not just a customer, you're an owner. Members pool their resources to create a store that reflects their values: fresh, local food at fair prices, support for regional farmers, and a commitment to sustainability.
Food co-ops operate on a one-member, one-vote basis. Regardless of how much you invest, every member has an equal say in how the co-op is run. This member-driven structure keeps the focus on what matters most to the community.
The Seven Cooperative Principles
All cooperatives around the world operate according to these guiding principles, established by the International Cooperative Alliance.
-
Voluntary and Open Membership
Co-ops are open to all people willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without discrimination.
-
Member Control
Members actively participate in setting policies and making decisions. Each member has one vote — one member, one vote.
-
Member Economic Participation
Members contribute equitably to the capital of the co-op and share in its benefits.
-
Autonomy and Independence
Co-ops are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members.
-
Education, Training, and Information
Co-ops provide education and training for members so they can contribute effectively to the development of the co-op.
-
Cooperation Among Cooperatives
Co-ops serve their members most effectively by working together through local, regional, national, and international structures.
-
Concern for Community
Co-ops work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies approved by their members.
How Co-ops Work
Food co-ops are owned by their members, not outside investors. This means:
- Member governance: One member, one vote
- Shared ownership: Members invest in and own the store together
- Community focus: Profits stay local and benefit members
- Transparency: Members have a say in how the store operates
Why It Matters Here
Northwest Connecticut has lost many of its local grocery options. The Farmington River Food Co-op will fill that gap, not with another chain store, but with a community-owned market that keeps money local, supports regional farmers, and gives residents a real voice in their food system. Donate or volunteer to help make it happen.
